The Earth Rang Like a Bell... Welcome to the Future
Golem was reading books about pyramids, always searching for the answer to his questions of why we are here and where are we going, and does life have a purpose or is it silly. A colleague at school had loaned him a book, Heaven’s Mirror and he was reading it straight through. Finally, some answers. He felt enlightened. It wasn’t a paperback book and the chemist would not have stolen it or read it on the pot. It was a big book with pictures, hard to get out the door without buying it. For a couple of weeks he became absorbed in reading all the books he could find on the origins of man and such things. Four structures built around the world with the same thing in mind. Structures that could keep time for 26,000 years. Structures that would remain when all else was gone. Precession might be a nasty thing. These people spoke of a low horizon in 10,500 B.C. and now half way through the cycle, in 2012 we would be at the height. The earth would wobble back down for the next 13,000 years. There was all this talk in these books of five new Suns. What happened to the old one. Was it obscured by ash? When the earth starts to wobble in a new direction is something thrown out of whack? Golem looked out at the sea. He was watching for a ten-mile high wave and twelve years of darkness. How many of us would see the new Sun? How many would remember the virtual reality game they had been playing when something big struck earth? How many of those should have known all along that what was important was their soul.
