Recovered Memories: He is Sure he Has Had Some

Golem remembers an untold tale. It is like a tale of middle earth. And who is to say that middle Earth did not exist. He doesn’t remember it completely. The thing he sees clearly is that it involves a hole.
He is very young. It has to wait to become a ‘recovered memory’ and he isn’t sure if it ever will come back. The psychologists will tell him some years later that it has something to do with his condition. For now he doesn’t know he has one. The lawsuit he will file and win in the late nineties will be of little consolation. He will have other more pressing problems by then—a lot of personalities, and some he doesn’t know he has. The docs said sure, the treatments could have created them. The concept of recovered memories is controversial by then, but he is sure he has some.

Suddenly things in the overhead racks go bump. A lady is stretched out in the aisle. The vapor flow increases. Golem screams. It is something he has never done before. He was one of those babies that don’t cry in the incubation ward; all around him babies were screaming, but Golem just wondered what the racket was. What had happened to his mind? Spiders and planes, and hanging on to the side of a cliff scared him. Those were the only things; wait, that’s not quite right, his nation scarred him now.
