Another Problem in Education that I See
Thailand Travel Kit: Huts, Trip Itineraries, and Tips for the Budget or Upscale Tourist by a Thailand Insider who has lived in Thailand for 8 years by Jack B. Wily ... see you in Thailand ...
I am not going to go into to details. Suffice it to say that i spent a year at a top high school in thailand. recruiters came from schools to get these students. i mean one day a lady from UCLA showed up. she had about ten minutes. i was already disgusted at that. she thought she would stay ten minutes and all the students would magically sign up.
now... 1. why was she there. are there not enough students in america? 2. why do universities market like people selling pancakes.
3. i thing i do remember from her talk. 'we offer no financial support' when i heard this, i knew automatically why she was there. she was there because students from abroad pay a shit-load of money to go to school in the US.
she was at a school for gifted students... she told them they could do research to develop tanks that 'heal themselves' is that disgusting enough already?
I took a little look at the brochure... i mean they have about a billion different majors. i mean obviously any education is a good thing. but when i looked at the list, i was hard put to find a dozen that might lead to employment. that is sad.
i mean we have all heard stories of people studying basket weaving. but now we have degrees in every cultural arena. you can learn for four years about spain. okay. is there a company that hires people that know everything about spain... it may be possible if you learn the language at the same time to do something, but at best it is pretty damn vague.
i mean what do you put on your resume. 'i know twenty-five different dishes of spanish food and understand the sexual apetite of the spanish people'- hum- i guess there are about 30 million spanish people who understand it better.
what i am saying is that any knowledge is good, but a good look at the want adds could tell you in a hurry that there arn't a lot of openings out there. hey. i mean anything is possible. but in a time when the cost of education is nearing a point where it is no longer economically feasible, i might suggest that something more aimed at an actual job would be more viable. and i might suggest that the elimination of a lot of majors would make it more affordable... and i might suggest that when a person goes to school that they have an actual goal... because all those MBA students without goals will never succeed. the ones that write their goals down will.
